PROTECT YOUR IDEAS

Remember... don't tell ANYONE about your idea until you...

  • Go to our Basic Patent and Trademark information page, where you can search the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office for similar inventions.

  • Mail a written form of your idea to yourself by certified mail. This gives you the minimum amount of patent protection. Then put the unopened and unsealed letter in a safe place. The postmark establishes the date of your invention.

  • File a Provisional Patent Application with the USPTO. This establishes an official "U.S. Patent Application Filing Date", and allows you to develop and market your invention using the words "Patent Pending" for up to a year.

  • Seek the advice of a good patent attorney for the most protection for your idea. Search the Patent Attorneys and Agents Registered to Practice before the PTO.

  • Find Financial Resources.

  • After you receive your patent, then establish your web presence using our PATENTPOST® service.
